"Quick" dinners fall apart for predictable reasons: too many components, prep that isn't started until the pan is already hot, and a recipe that was never really 30 minutes to begin with. Fix those three things and half-hour dinners become the default, not the exception.
Read the total time, not the "cook time"
A recipe that lists 15 minutes of cook time but needs a long stretch of chopping first is not a 15-minute dinner. What matters is total time, start to plate. Every recipe in our quick 30-minute recipes collection takes 30 minutes or less in total, prep included, so there are no surprises. When you're really pressed, the 15-minute recipes collection is the shortlist. Grocerplan's fastest dinners
Of Grocerplan's 78 dinners, 39 take 30 minutes or less from start to finish, and 11 take 20 minutes or less. These are the quickest, with each recipe's own estimates:
1.
Quick Cacio e Pepe: 15 minutes, 24 g of protein per serving, an estimated $1.90 a serving.
2.
Miso Glazed Cod: 15 minutes, 32 g of protein per serving, an estimated $2.96 a serving.
3.
Garlic Butter Shrimp Zoodles: 15 minutes, 28 g of protein per serving, an estimated $4.40 a serving.
4.
Crispy Pesto Gnocchi Skillet: 15 minutes, 14 g of protein per serving, an estimated $2.80 a serving.
5.
Spanish Garlic Shrimp: 16 minutes, 26 g of protein per serving, an estimated $2.95 a serving.
6.
Turkey Lettuce Wraps: 18 minutes, 24 g of protein per serving, an estimated $1.80 a serving.
7.
Honey Garlic Salmon: 20 minutes, 36 g of protein per serving, an estimated $2.50 a serving.
Seafood takes four of the seven spots for a reason: shrimp and thin fish fillets cook in minutes, which makes them good weeknight anchors. If you don't eat seafood, Quick Cacio e Pepe and Crispy Pesto Gnocchi Skillet are vegetarian, and Turkey Lettuce Wraps is the cheapest of the seven.
Prep while the pan heats
The single biggest time-saver costs nothing: start your chopping and measuring *before* you turn on the heat, and keep prepping during the idle minutes while things simmer or roast. Professional kitchens call this mise en place; at home it just means the onion is diced before the oil is hot.
Favor one-pan and sheet-pan formats
Every extra pot is another thing to watch and wash. One-pan pastas, sheet-pan proteins and vegetables, and stir-fries collapse the cooking and the cleanup into a single vessel. They're forgiving, too: a sheet pan doesn't care if you're five minutes behind.
Keep five fast dinners on permanent standby
Decision fatigue is what turns a 6pm into takeout. Keep a rotation of five dinners you can make without a recipe, such as a stir-fry, a pasta, a taco night, a grain bowl and an egg-based dinner, and the 6pm question mostly answers itself. Browse dinner recipes to fill out the rotation. Let the plan do the thinking
In Grocerplan, Plan my week picks seven dinners sized to your household. To put the fast ones first, open Tune options on the Plan tab, then More options, turn on Prioritize quick meals and tap Generate Plan: dinners of 30 minutes or less move up the list and the longest ones move down. You can still swap any night. The week's ingredients then go on one grocery list, which opens on Instacart, where you choose the store and check out, or you can print it for any store.
